The Blackblood Alliance

I recently received one of the limited edition, signed copies (#88) of Issue Number One of the Blackblood Alliance (BBA for short) by Kay Fedewa and E. Siegle. The comic arrived in a wonderful envelope with a depiction of the main character, SwiftKill, on it. The book itself is slightly larger then your standard comic; its size serves it well by giving a great spread to the stylized artwork contained inside. The comic is printed in vibrant color on glossy paper. Overall, the book is of great quality and showcases the talents of its creators nicely. It contains twenty-nine pages of story, all magnificently detailed in color on the book's oversized pages.

The story itself was an easy read, and easy to follow. The central conflict is between two warring tribes of ancient creatures, Saber tooth Cats and Wolves. The setting takes place before the Age of Man and follows the trials and adventures of these prehistoric beasts. The central focus is on the Wolves of Inaria and their fight against the invading Sabers. But the plot is not that simple, instead it takes the reader down a route of betrayal, intrigue and bitter rivalry, revolving around a feud between two distinct factions within the Wolf Community.

The Blackbloods, labeled such by the main pack of the Inaria wolves, find themselves victims of a plot against them that would banish them as the protectors of Inaria, and thus set the scene for the coming invasion of the Sabers. Lead by the wolf Swiftkill, a caring wolf made bitter by betrayal, this group of rogue wolves forms the backbone of the story as its main protagonists. The character dynamics between the wolves in the Blackblood pack are interesting and entertaining, especially the antics of Riptide.

Overall the book was wonderfully drawn, its media well selected and the characters well cast. Easy to read, great to look at; I would recommend this comic to any who like a smoothly flowing plot and interesting animal characters. I am looking forward to the second issue of The Blackblood Alliance.
